Bike shops fall flat as riders go online.

Byline: Katie Walsh

Jun 05, 2011 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Productivity Commission is investigating whether the goods and services tax (GST) exemption for imported goods under $A1,000 should be removed. With bicycle shops finding it hard to compete with internet retailers, Josh Blake of Sydney's Renegade Cycles believes the exemption should go, even though he says he would still find it hard to compete with web-based retailers. His comments are borne out by consumer Nick Coatsworth, who paid $A4,180, including freight, for a bike from the US in 2010. The same item sells for $A5,800 in Australia.
