Fed: Howard gazumps Rudd's water announcement

CANBERRA, Feb 20 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard has gazumped Labor leader Kevin Rudd,
hinting that a West Australian irrigation project will receive federal funding.

Mr Rudd was expected to promise this morning to contribute $49 million to the Harvey
irrigation project in south-west Western Australia if Labor is elected this year.

But Mr Howard said the project was likely to receive federal funding anyway.

Both leaders are campaigning in WA this week, where several key marginal seats could
help decide this year's election.
