eT Communications Goes Wireless; SkyTel Alliance Provides New Energy Information Solution Architecture.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 10, 1999--eT Communications, Inc. and SkyTel Communications Inc. today announced an agreement to integrate SkyTel's national two-way messaging network into eT Communications' successful energy information solution, the eT SmartLinX System.

The addition of two-way wireless capabilities dramatically complements the eT SmartLinX System's current wireline architecture, creating a low-risk, low-cost, national solution that allows for economical monitoring and control of commercial and residential energy. The wireless SmartLinX System is targeted for use by energy companies that need to gather real-time energy usage data and offer value-added services in order to retain and attract customers in an increasingly competitive, deregulated market.

"Partnering with SkyTel enables us to quickly complement our wireline solution with a national, two-way wireless solution based on open technology standards," said Donald J. Massaro, CEO of eT Communications. "Our energy customers can now implement small or large deployments for their most crucial customers without the cost of deploying a private network and with the flexibility of adding new value-added and enhanced customer care services. This is further proof of our commitment to open architecture and to providing our customers with multiple solutions to the problem of remotely monitoring, collecting and managing data."

The wireless eT SmartLinX System is a complete end-to-end solution consisting of an intelligent, premise gateway that acquires meter data while monitoring and controlling other premise based devices, SkyTel's two-way paging network, Motorola's two-way ReFLEX transceiver, a client/server based database and robust information system software.

"We are very excited to be working with eT Communications," added Mark Rodgers, SkyTel Fixed Wireless vice president. "The combination of eT's SmartLinX end-to-end solution and SkyTel's national wireless network provides a powerful combination for new applications targeted uniquely for the energy industry."

A working prototype system will be demonstrated at DistribuTECH '99 from Feb. 16-18 in San Diego, an energy provider technology conference. Additional units are already being field-tested with early adopter customers.
