Embargoed BJS Release on Incarceration Rate Available Now

News Advisory:The Bureau of Justice Statistics has a news release EMBARGOEDuntil 4:30 p.m. EDT Sunday, Jan. 19, but available now by callingthe BJS fax-on-demand system at 301-251-5550 and selecting document49 after listening to the voice prompts. The incarceration rate inthe nation's federal and state prisons and local jails almostdoubledduring the last decade. In 1985 jails and prisons held an estimated313 men and women per 100,000 United States residents. By June 30,1996, this had increased to 615 inmates per 100,000 residents or onein every 163 residents. Between year-end 1985 and mid-year 1996 theincarcerated population grew from 744,208 to 1,630,940, an averagegrowth of 7.8 percent a year. The media contact is Stu Smith on202-633-3047.
