Fed: Andrews backs report on mature-age workers

Federal Minister for Ageing KEVIN ANDREWS says a new report highlights the need foremployers and employees to increase the number of older people in the workforce.

Union and business leaders have today released a report containing alarming statisticsabout the impact of the nation's ageing population, estimated to cost $27 billion in losteconomic growth and spending each decade.

The report, by Emeritus Professor SOL ENCEL of the University of NSW, has found thesocial and economic cost of the ageing population is compounded by the relatively lowlevels of older workers remaining at work.

The report has found Australia has a strong culture of early retirement compared toother developed countries.

Mr ANDREWS says one of the challenges of Australia's rapidly ageing population is theneed to keep older people in the workforce longer.
