A HOME FOR THE ARTS.(PERSPECTIVE)

This is the week when a part of Troy's past becomes prelude to a new era in the arts. It is the opening week of the newly and ambitiously named Arts Center for the Capital Region.

The timing could not be more appropriate. It comes on the dawn of a new century, yet it is linked to the lustre of an earlier era. For years, the center was known as the Rensselaer County Council for the Arts, and its home was a handsome brownstone facing the city's bucolic Washington Park. But the old house, though charming, was too confining for an arts center that continued to attract and serve thousands throughout the Capital Region and beyond.
