Guilty verdict for US contractor

HAVANA - A Cuban court yesterday found US contractor Alan Grossguilty of crimes against the state and sentenced him to 15 years inprison. The court said prosecutors had proved their case that Gross,61, a Maryland native, was working on a "subversive" program paidfor by the United States that aimed to bring down the revolution. Hewas arrested in December 2009 while working on a USAID backeddemocracy-building project. The US government and Gross's family sayhe was working to improve Internet access for the island's Jewishcommunity. (AP)

SUDAN

Southern Sudan army repels attack

JUBA - A militia opposed to the Southern Sudanese governmentlaunched an overnight raid on a strategic town but was repulsed bySouthern Sudanese forces yesterday, said army and UN officials.Fighting between Sudan People's Liberation Army forces and a militiafor a minority ethnic group started outside the capital of theborder state of Upper Nile in the early-morning hours. The Southernarmy repulsed the attack on the city of Malakal. At least 30 rebelsand four government soldiers were killed. (AP)

PAKISTAN

Chief of spy agency to remain in post

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan's government will extend the term of thecountry's powerful spy chief, the CIA's main partner in the fightagainst Al Qaeda and the Taliban and a major player in the country'spolicies toward Afghanistan, an official said yesterday. Thedecision to keep Lieutenant General Ahmad Shuja Pasha as head ofInter-Services Intelligence ensures continuity during a crucialphase in the war in Afghanistan. (AP)
